Emma's Drawings
The Seen Self
Medium: Graphite on Paper
Size: 9" x 11"
This self-portrait is divided between observation and construction.
One side reflects direct perception; the other reveals the process of drawing, where identity is gradually formed.
The split suggests that the self is not fixed, but shaped by how we are seen, interpreted, and reconstructed.
It questions whether identity belongs to the individual—or to the gaze of society.
Seeing Ordinary Objects in a New Way
Medium: Soft Pastels on Paper
Size: 16" x 24"
This still life uses bright, unexpected colors to change how we see everyday objects. Instead of realistic colors, I chose bold and surreal tones to create a dreamlike feeling. The contrast between the dark background and glowing objects helps them stand out and feel more expressive.
I used soft pastels to blend colors smoothly and build texture. The layering allows the objects to look both soft and solid at the same time.
Through this piece, I explore how color can change mood and meaning, showing that even simple objects can feel new and interesting when viewed differently.
Blue Reverie
Medium: Colored Pencil on Paper
Size: 11" x 14"
This drawing shows a blue-toned cat quietly watching a glowing butterfly. I used unusual colors instead of realistic ones to create a dreamlike and magical feeling.
The light on the butterfly and the highlights on the cat help focus attention on their connection. The dark background makes the moment feel calm and isolated, as if time has slowed down.
Using colored pencils, I built up layers to create texture in the fur and soft lighting effects. Through this piece, I explore how curiosity can turn a simple moment into something meaningful and full of wonder.
